Each student receives 16 hours of instruction by a Certified Instructor specifically trained to communicate the basic skills necessary to operate a pool or spa facility. The course is intensive and covers water chemistry, testing, treatment, filtration, maintenance, automatic feeding equipment, government requirements, etc. Each student must pass a written examination in English to be certified. Translation to Spanish is available upon request.
The Pool and Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA) offers this course in 2 different formats:
Two-day format: a face-to-face pool/spa operator training course delivered by an experienced instructor (test included). One-day format: a hybrid course called a "Fusion" course is also available. For this course, students must first complete about 8-10 hours of online work (done in your own home and at your own pace), then come to a one-day face-to-face class to finish the course (test included).
FAQs:
Do I need to study before the class? No, the two-day class will walk you through the PHTA Handbook and all you need to know for the open book/open notes exam.Is the class offered with Spanish translator? Yes. NC Pool School has a bilingual translator for the instructor. To request a Spanish translator, please email info@ncpoolschool.com . Also, testing materials and handbooks are available in Spanish. If you are registered for a CPO class and would like a handbook and exam materials in Spanish, please email info@ncpoolschool.com at least a week before your class. What is needed for the class? Please bring a photo ID, calculator, pencil and highlighter to the class. If you have a current license that will soon expire, please bring your current license to class with you. (See Recertification information below). What is needed to pass and when will I know? You must score 74% on the 50-question multiple choice exam [which is open book/open notes] to pass. Your test will be graded on the day after the class, and you will receive an email indicating your score and a second email with your PDF certification. If your score is 74% or greater, keep this PFD certification until your official documentation is received by mail.Do I need to take the class to renew an expired license? If your current CPO license has not expired by the class/exam date, you are only required to come to the second day of our two-day CPO class. Before registering, please email a copy of your current CPO license to info@ncpoolschool.com . While not required, you are encouraged to attend both days. If your original CPO license has expired, you will need to attend both days of the class.
Certification
Graduates will receive a certificate, suitable for framing, and a wallet card issued by the Pool and Hot Tub Alliance.
The wallet card is a miniature version of the certificate and carries the graduate's personal CPO registration number. Certification is valid for 5 years.
Holding an active CPO certification but expiration is approaching? Two options:
[1] Candidates can purchase CPO POP Fusion course, then attend the second day where the exam is administered at the end of the day.

Reviews from Students
Brian G. - It was a true pleasure to learn from you. I admire how you were able to accommodate so many learning styles, how you were able to cover so much material, and how you were able to make it relatable to me, who is very unfamiliar with the industry.
Jake J. - I didn't have a chance to tell you how much I appreciated your instruction! I am currently a senior at NC State and I wanted to mention to you that many of the professors I have had were nowhere nearly as helpful and as able to describe the course matter as you were able to in just two days.
Supervisor Mark - The feedback from the students was all positive. They enjoyed your teaching style. They felt that they received the proper training to perform the tasks required in the CPO position.
